I found my “happy place” Gosh where to even begin?! I travelled from the U.K. via Vegas and Tucson as a solo female after having read the great reviews It was an easy and picturesque drive of approx 1.10 hours from Tucson and when I arrived I was warmly greeted by beautiful Renee My casita was amazing. Clean, well equipped, super comfy bed and with a patio overlooking sheer bliss. Mountains, fields and a paddock full of happy content horses The peace, serenity and sheer beauty of this place cannot be conveyed via words on Trip Advisor or mere photos. The mountains change colour depending on the time of day and the sunrises and sunsets leave you realising you’ve probably found paradise! I loved the family feel of eating together with the whole crew. Wonderful chef who worked her magic with her new smoker to perfection omg the beef brisket was to DIE for ❤️ Everyone who lives/works there is a credit to the ranch. If I miss anyone I apologise. Ron and Trina - amazing owners whose knowledge of the business is incredible. So kind and welcoming Renee - thank you for your friendship I loved our girls ride on my last day please come visit me in the UK!! Frank and Will - fantastic horse man ship, caring, interesting and fun Rebecca and Hannah - so friendly and sweet The riding was more than I could’ve imagined. I loved my horses, especially gorgeous sure footed Amigo who kept me safe and secure. I also adored all the cute pooches that become your instant friend and came on the rides with us. The horses and dogs are so well loved and content it makes your heart happy I came for the riding and the trails are indescribable - they’ll match you with a horse dependant on your level of confidence and experience and even a complete novice would have the best time. We rode through canyons and fields and to the top of the red rocks and each time I didn’t want the experience to end On the Sunday, myself and the other 4 guests - all of whom I thoroughly enjoyed meeting - were taken to the local rodeo which was so much fun. Ron even treated us all to a steak dinner there afterwards which was do kind. I would absolutely love to return and as another reviewer mentioned, you feel as if you leave as a friend or part of the extended family. Benson, Arizona. Very friendly & informative Ron, the owner, presented the ranch as a homey place, where everybody fits in and can enjoy a horseback ride & relaxation. The staff is great. The home-style meals are good. The rooms are nice. The area is really great for a horseback ride. The surrounding land is beautiful. You'll feel you are back in the old west. The horses are nice too. The proximity to wine tasting is perfect, the grounds are stunning and the interactions with the animals were out of this world wonderful! We’d recommend anyone stay here and enjoy the quiet beauty. Went looking for good scenery, warmth, sun, and horseback riding that wasn't the typical nose to tail rides. As an experienced rider in my 60's who lives on a farm in MN, I wasn't looking for a dude ranch but a place where the emphasis was on riding a lot and letting the horses run some. That's exactly what I got. The high valley location was beautiful and green with wildflowers and bushes blooming and beautiful scenic views from the comfy , clean, western style casitas where the guests stayed, which were right next to the horse pastures so I could mosey over and say hi to the horses anytime. I was matched with a horse that suited me well and enjoyed my runs on him and knew I could trust him when the terrain was rocky or a little steep. Horses were obviously well cared for and a variety of sizes to accommodate guests with varying levels of experience. Trail guides were experienced and knowledgeable and careful to keep an eye on the less experienced riders and provide a safe ride. Those of us staying at the ranch could ride up to 3 times/day if we wanted. Given the uncharacteristic March heat in the 90's while there, and my age, I opted for just 2 daily rides with one being the daily evening ride. Several of the rides were hours long, going higher up the hills and trusting the horses to pick their way thru rocks. The food was absolutely delicious with a chef who provided good variety and portions and a daily salad lunch option for those who wanted it. It was served farm table style with all guests, owners and ranch hands eating together so we got to know each other quickly and I enjoyed hearing the owners and others stories. A bonus was a lot of the guests were from outside the US...fun to hear their experiences. I visited a beautiful state park with a reservoir nearby where I kayaked one afternoon and Saguaro National Park and Tucson were close by for a visit too. Spent a week at Double R in May 2026. It was an impulse decision after looking online for an adult horseback riding vacation. I contacted the ranch directly and their attention to my questions and assurances about traveling as a solo woman was what sold me. It was everything they said it would be and more. The ranch only accommodates a small number of guests so it is an intimate experience. Your happiness is the goal of the hosts; owners Ron & Trina Sirota and their manager Renee. This place is the real deal. It is no frills but comfortable with a focus on riding and an appreciation of the terrain and culture. The horses are happy and amazing. I am not a total beginner but I'm certainly not experienced so I appreciated the daily guidance and the subsequent lesson I took with Trina. I felt very safe in my little casita with a porch view of the beautiful land and grazing horses. This was a unique and memorable experience. A special shout out to Renee for everything!!! Ron, Trina, Renee and Annie made sure we had the best possible experience during our 4-day trip. From beautiful trail rides and wonderful 1:1 riding lessons on the most lovable, well-trained horses, to fun meals and taking part in ranch activities, we felt like part of a family by the time we left. Ron & Trina are wonderful hosts and very down to earth. Staff was wonderful & caring. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed our time & they made it feel like we were just visiting family (without all the work haha). Meals around the table were great with never a dull conversation. Double R Ranch really does just want you to make the trip your own & have a great experience. Our experience was amazing! The gentleness and caring with which Trina instructed our 15 year old was heartwarming. The ranch had horses for every level of rider experience. Unlike "trail rides" in other locations with "lobotomized horses", I was placed on "Max" who offered me a challenge and learning experience. The "casita" we stayed in was very clean and comfortable. The meals around a table with all of the guests were such a good time to get to know people and the food was very good. jackMay 14, 2026Recent Visit To Double R Ranch I am a solo traveler and decided to make the Double R Ranch my home for a short stay so I could go horseback riding. Ron, Trina, and Lisa provided a warm welcoming environment making me feel relaxed and at ease. This included attending to my specific dietary restrictions. Food was plentiful and tasty. Lisa gave me a recipe to try at home Riding each day brought a new and challenging adventure which took us thru picturesque scenery. It was wondrous the way the horses handled the different and and at times demanding terrain On the weekend we went into the historic town of Tombstone. As an added surprise we were able to see up close bull riding at the local arena. Waking up early each morning to watch the sunrise over the mountains was breathtaking. Horses, cows or any animal larger than my fat cat scares me a bit. When we arrived. We were warmly welcomed by Ron, the owner of double R ( Ron’s Ranch) Then Renee his employee that was our guide for the 1 hour ride. I have to say I am already getting ready to book an overnight in 2 weeks!! I had such a spiritual experience there. I’m a grieving momma and DoubleR Ranch has something special about it. As a solo female traveller who has been to many places on my own, I can honestly say I felt immediately at ease & completely safe here. I’ve never felt more comfortable right off the bat. More than that, Ron, Trina & Renee treat you like family from the get-go. They are the real deal, they live & breathe the ranch life and their authenticity shines through. All the home cooked meals are shared family style and prepared by Karen. Everything is delicious and if you’re a dessert person, wait until you try her baked goodies, they’re amazing. I stayed in the cabin and it was perfect. Nice & cozy and super comfy. If you’re a dog person, you’re going to love all the sweet pups living at the ranch too. You can tell right away how much everyone, including the wranglers Will and Gary, love the horses. They’re so well taken care of and it shows. It was nice to wake up in the morning to a beautiful sunrise and be able to stop by & say hello to them while they waited for their breakfast. The rides are fantastic. Gary and Will are very attentive and much care is taken to pair you with the right horse for your skill level. And the scenery is gorgeous. My only regret is not having stayed longer. Everything about this place exceeded our expectations: the location, the accommodations, the horses and the people! As seasoned equestrians, we appreciated the well-trained horses, friendly wranglers and exciting trails. But there are horses and trails for every riding level. And speaking of the horses, every horse on the property is owned by the ranch. Many of them were rescued from unfortunate circumstances and are now living their best life as beloved members of the ranch family. But that’s just how it is at the Double R Ranch. Whether you’re a greenhorn or a seasoned equestrian, Double R Ranch has the perfect horse and trail ride for you on countless acres of scenic rolling hills on National Forest land. We stayed for 8 days and never rode the same route twice! The wranglers are friendly and knowledgeable, and the horses are safe and sure-footed. And speaking of the horses… every one of the 30+ horses are owned by the ranch. Some of them have been rescued from unfortunate situations and are now living their best life as beloved members of the ranch family. We stayed in one of the beautifully appointed casitas on the ranch property. When we weren’t in the saddle we explored some of the local wineries and nearby historic Tombstone. I definitely plan on returning for a longer stay! Everything about this experience was top notch. The hosts and staff were welcoming and made me feel like family. The horses were well trained, and very well cared for. My little casita was clean and comfortable and private. The food was delicious, and the chef made desserts that were SO good. Finally, the scenic rides were beautiful and well thought out to meet every experience level. We covered quite a bit of country and it was great. The Casita I stayed in was warm and comfortable. The food by Karen and Renee was amazing. I’m surprised I didn’t gain weight. The host Ron and Trina are fantastic and make you feel instantly at home like part of the family. I rode over 70 miles in two weeks and enjoyed every mile. Gina DJanuary 2, 2026A Good Time For Two Experienced Riders This trip was a high school graduation gift to my granddughter and we did a great deal of research before selecting Double R. We enjoyed being part of the ranch life for 3 days and found the horses to be fit and fun to ride. The meals were filling, the trip to "town" was pleasant and the rodeo was a great treat for us. We were part of a small group of guests and experienced various rides, some slow and some with a little more opportunity to trot, some short 2 hour rides and a couple of half day rides (which we liked best). My granddaughter took a ride where she was permitted to canter and she still talks about her favorite horse, Roxy. This was a good trip for us. We felt safe on the trails and experienced some beautiful views, some of which reminded us of scenes from favorite TV westerns. I called ahead because I’ve never ridden a horse and my wife had only gone a few times. They matched us with the perfect horses based on size and experience and it made a huge difference. As an Arizona native, being out in Elgin almost feels like stepping into the Midwest. It’s such a different vibe and made the whole experience even better. We stayed in order of departure on the ride, but still felt free enough to have fun without ever feeling unsafe, especially at my experience level. The scenery was beautiful, we got great pictures, the staff was super accommodating, and every horse truly does have its own personality. Kasey MNovember 22, 2025The most warm, welcoming and magical place! If you’re debating booking with double R ranch, DO IT! It was the most incredible experience I have ever had so far in my life. Even before arriving, Ron kept me updated with plans for getting collected from the airport and settled any of my nerves that I had prior to coming as a solo female traveller. Emails and messages were always responded quickly and efficiently which I really appreciated. I stayed on the ranch for 5 nights, 6 days altogether and got SO much riding completed within that time as well as a special afternoon visit to Tombstone. From the moment I arrived I felt extremely welcomed and I felt so relaxed, peaceful and almost couldn’t believe I was really there experiencing and seeing the things I did. The horses are all so well behaved and the dogs are an added bonus! I had all my meals at the ranch which were faultless everytime. This wouldn’t be possible without the incredible staff who live and breathe life into the ranch with special mention to Renee, my time wouldn’t have been what it was without you! I had a lovely four days in beautiful Elgin, where Ron, Trina and Renee made sure I felt welcome and comfortable. It is beautiful country and I took daily walks as well as the rides. In my experience the horses are particularly well-trained and capable. I loved Max, my "Gypsy Vanner", a strong young fellow. The cabins are perfect, with comfortable beds, internet, kitchens, and great decor. Meals are plentiful, served family-style in the comfortable lounge area. The famous town of Tombstone is not far. There are 31 horses on the ranch, a variety to meet every rider's needs. Mealtime is set around the table where we relaxed and reflected on the day's activities, as we enjoyed a satisfying meal and special dietary needs are met. Ron takes great pride in matching the riders and their horses to ensure a great time is had. Rides are given in the morning, afternoon and evening, so one can get back to nature, enjoying the outdoors and wildlife that accompanied us along the way. Trina and Renee round out the team attending to our needs. There are few places left where one can get away from city lights, sirens and traffic. This is a stress free zone! Christie WOctober 31, 2025Excellent October 2025 Solo trip As an experienced rider and British girl I’ve forever had the dream of visiting an American ranch to experience not only the western riding style but their approach and culture in general. Despite not having anyone to join me I booked the trip just a month before and went solo! I’d done smaller solo trips before but nothing so far away from home. Anxieties began to loom a few days before setting off but Ron was very prompt on email responding to any questions I had, which really helped. Once I arrived I was made to feel comfortable straight away, the other guests I met were very friendly and the staff really approachable from the off set. Loads of lovely ranch dogs to keep you company as well. My accommodation was fantastic, clean and on cowboy theme also which I loved! Whilst there we rode multiple times per day (faster paced rides too for those capable), had an amazing day trip out to Tombstone and the Benson rodeo, visited a local winery and ate delicious varied food at every meal. Whilst there I was lucky enough to have a hands on role helping out where I could / wanted to. I felt bonded to the horses and greatly appreciated how well they were being looked after by Ron, Trina, Renee and the rest of the team. I was there for just under a week and had the opportunity to ride 4 geldings and 1 mare. The ponies/horses sizes, strengths and personalities are of such variation there really is the opportunity for every kind of rider to feel catered for. j rOctober 23, 2025I went back in time at the Double R Guest Ranch After a few too many cowboy movies, I went a search en for my authentic western movie ranch experience. After much research, I found the Double R Guest Ranch. I choose the 5 day package so I could take in more of Elgin Arizona's sunny mountainous rugged terrain, surrounding by the Majestic Coronado National Forest. I read some of the ranches Mission is to “create joyful experiences and meaningful connections that inspire through conversations, exploration, and provide memorable, beautifully scenic tours.” And I would say the do that for sure ! * The Ranch proprietors Trina and Ron were fun and very attentive and empathetic. * Accommodations were very nice and relaxing. All needs were meet. * The real Cowboys / Cowgirls staff had some great stories and were super nice. * The ranch surroundings and trails are breathtakingly beautiful of clean air and wide open blue sky. * The diverse selection of horses were all so very beautiful and well mannered. * Meal time were always tasty and the conversation around the table with the variety of guests was always light and fun. I could write a book here on my experiences, from the evening visit to the City of Tombstone, the knowledge learned of how to properly saddle and ride a horse to the relationships formed and memories made in just the few short days. But I’ll save you and just say, either a day sunset ride or a few days stay, the Double R Guest Ranch really is an all around beautiful Western Ranch. Everyone goes above and beyond to ensure that guests are happy, I especially want to give a shoutout to Renee who works super hard in making sure that people have memorable experiences. I don't think I had laughed so hard and so much in a long time as we did on our little adventures. I would say that if you are an experienced rider looking for faster riding this is not the place, as much of the terrain is rocky and unsuitable for fast work, however the amazing views and wonderful horses make up for this. I was fortunate enough to ride a good variety of very different horses during my stay and loved them all. If Romeo goes missing one day, it wasn't me that came and kidnapped him.......... After receiving clear directions and helpful tips from our host, we drove through quiet rural roads to the ranch, where the landscape came alive with cows and curious horses who paused to watch us pass by. We were warmly greeted by friendly dogs and our hosts—Ron, his wife Trina, and Kate—who made us feel right at home. The casita we stayed in was more like a dream vacation home—cozy, comfortable, and full of charm. That evening, we enjoyed a delicious home-cooked meal with the group, and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere made it feel like we were among old friends. The next morning, after breakfast, we were paired with beautiful, well-trained horses and given a solid intro to horsemanship. Our guide, Kate—new to the ranch but not to ranching— is highly experienced and knowledgeable. She led us through scenic trails, pointing out mountain ranges, native plants, and offering gentle guidance along the ride. It was a perfect start to the day. Later, we had a fantastic lunch followed by a trip to a local vineyard for a wine tasting. Who would've thought AZ would be known for wine? We enjoyed the wine so much that we couldn't resist picking up a few bottles to share with dinner that night. Dinner was equally delightful, and the conversations flowed effortlessly, as if we had all know each other for decades. The next day turned out to be the highlight of the trip. After another delicious breakfast, we embarked on a 3-hour trail ride through breathtaking landscapes, stopping along the way for photo ops and another gentleman on the trail ride (John) offered interesting local stories as well. In the afternoon, we cleaned up and headed to Tombstone to shop and explore. We dined at the iconic Big Nose Kate’s Saloon and soaked up some Wild West history. The evening wrapped up with our first-ever Team Roping event. Trina, a skilled roper, gave us a crash course in the sport, and we had a blast watching the action and learning how it’s scored. From the stunning scenery and warm hospitality of Ron, Trina, Renee, and Kate to the incredible horses and unforgettable experiences, our time at Double R Ranch was a trip we’ll always remember. What a sweet little day trip! Ive never owned a horse but If you want to get out of the city or need a date activity this is cool place! They had a beautiful trail, the picnic was small but cute, and it's really good for beginners. I got to meet one of their long term guest from France who was preparing for a horseback trip in Africa and it was really nice to have lunch set up like a true ranch style meal. We got to talk to new people, there's tons of great photo ops, and the cutest little gift store. Staff isn't super friendly and it's definitely not a hilton but everything is cute and on theme. I needed to get out of the energy of the city so I got a Groupon to go riding around the time Covid started. It was a solo ride and I didn’t know what to expect but loved the dogs running around and all the horses. I loved one of the dogs so much I almost asked if they would be willing to sell it to me. It was a beautiful day for a ride and it’s always therapeutic when you need to zone out a little and just enjoy the outdoors. This time I got a groupon and my father and I decided to go for another trail ride. The first ride was cancelled due to the wind. The second attempt was a group ride and I rode a horse named cardio named that because of the upside down heart on its chest that reminded me of a horse I used to ride named Nevada. My father rode a horse named lightning. It was a nice easy ride and we took a different trail than I had gone on the 1st time so we got a new view. They have a lot of small houses and trailers for guests to stay overnight or a long weekend and a large property hike, ride, etc. There’s also an alfalfa farm right down the road. Double R Ranch provided this and more! I went for the half day trail ride and was on Dante who was a great trail mount and very handsome! The animals are well cared for and loved. The scenery was like no other. Trina's cooking was top notch and there was always plenty of choices. The drive is not too far off from pavement, but when traveling on the dirt road, the beautiful views and lack of houses and city life, it almost feels like you’ve stepped back in time 100 years. The ranch location is in its own small valley, surrounded by small mountains and hillsides. The horses are well taken care of and the owners and employees are welcoming and so friendly. Rachel SabinFebruary 4, 2025Double R Guest Ranch is a unique experience I’d recommend. There’s a calm, steady rhythm to the ranch. It’s easy to fall into that rhythm and forget the hurried pace of the typical life. The horses at the ranch are treated with respect and concern. Their wellbeing is regarded as essential to the functioning of the operation. Their distinct personalities are celebrated. Having gone on several of the rides, I’d recommend the longer ones over the shortest, the scenery is better. The accommodations? Double R is a working ranch not a luxury hotel. The Bunk, as the bungalow we stayed in is called, was clean and comfortable but not frilly. The beds were a little hard, spiders occasionally crossed our paths, and the toilet was of the incinerating variety. If you are planning on a stay, I’d recommend looking up incineration toilets so you can practice peeing sitting down, if you don’t do that already anyway. Our accommodations had a regular sink and shower. Ron and the rest of the staff go out of their way to make sure your experience is memorable. Sharon LJanuary 15, 2025Horse lovers will love it here Horses are wonderfully cared for( not always the case at riding stables). Some are rescues, and the owners and guides know them well. The horse you ride will be chosen with care. I took a 1 1/2 hour ride. Riding out in the beautiful, quiet desert with the mountains and open skies surrounding is an unforgettable experience. I’m an elder, and my guide Tony made sure I could hear what he said….great voice, Tony! The owners are friendly and knowledgeable. Obviously, they care deeply for their animals and the land. The road to the ranch is fine. It is not an expressway and some is unpaved, but this is a ranch and the road there is part of its charm. I had a compact rental car and had no concerns. There are so many good things to say about the people, the horses, the beautiful setting and the accommodations. Highlights were time spent with the owners Ron and Trina, riding in a small group over rugged and austere terrain with our lovely guides, getting to spend hours in the saddle and getting to know the 2 lovely horses - Perfect American and Mocha - to which I was assigned. My husband enjoyed the horses that he rode, too. He appreciated the roping lesson. I am only a little disappointed that Christmas prep at the ranch got in the way of the fast ride and/or trying out of barrels. The living room had an electric fireplace that was more than adequate in the cool morning. The rides, one in morning and one in evening, were both scenic, enjoyable out through the desert hills. Ranglers were accommodating and very conscious of the riders needs. The meals at the lodge were very good and more than sufficient. Really enjoyed our visits with Ron, Trina and Renee. The outstanding note is where this ranch is located. It’s in a very quiet, peaceful valley surrounded by mountains. The sunrise over the mountains was spectacular. As was the sunset on our ride. We stayed at the Double R Ranch in Benson, Arizona in early October 2024. I must admit that we highly underestimated the Ranch - it was so much better than expected. My wife and I both enjoy horseback riding and taking advantage of being empty nesters, we like to escape occasionally to indulge in riding and the ranch experience. We've stayed at much more well-known "ranch resorts" or dude ranches. While amazing, they are a different experience altogether. The Double R is more of the true ranch experience (more intimate, and more hands on). Little things like family-style meals with guests, the ranch owner, and staff make for a truly great experience. We had a chance to talk about the day's multiple rides, "highlights of that day", and our individual experiences with our assigned horses. When we can be around horses, we want more than riding. We want the opportunity for more hands-on experiences like tacking our horse - that's not always allowed at other ranches. We were never asked to do this at Double R, but it was not denied when we asked. Their guidance made sure we did it correctly and double checked our work to ensure the safety of riders and horses. This was a huge plus for us. The rides were 3-5 hours, up and down hills, and through some of the most amazing southern Arizona deserts with views for miles and guides who knew the history of the area. Being raised in Arizona, I truly appreciate not only the views but the stories as well. The food was good home cooking with plenty to go around - we never left hungry. A very special Thank You to the amazing people who prepared the meals. We were surprised one evening to see they even offered words of affirmation in a note to each guest before dinner. I still have mine, Thank You! There are multiple options for lodgings. Like I said, this is not a resort, but a ranch and the different accommodations are assigned based on your needs and the number of people in your party. We stayed in a little cottage about a quarter mile away from everyone else (perfect!). It was clean and private, making it easy to feel like we were the only ones there. I didn't see the other accommodations but I talked with the other guests and they were more than satisfied with their lodgings as well. While we were there, the Benson Rodeo was happening on Saturday. The Double R Ranch was one of the major sponsors and we were given tickets to enjoy the rodeo. I've attended 7 amazing rodeos this year. But if you have never attended a truly small-town rodeo, you are missing out! You can feel the community at events like this with family and neighbors coming together. A pleasure to experience and feel welcomed by the locals of Benson and surrounding areas! I cannot express enough that their web page made me a little nervous with the minimalist approach on what they have to offer on this ranch. The kids went through some equine history, animal care and handling, riding tack maintenance and use, and a trail ride. The instructional portion wasn't boring; it was interactive and entertaining. The kids were matched up with horses and staff members based on their comfort level and experience; very safety minded. We had a couple around 8 y/o and a few with no experience, they enjoyed themselves. The adults that didn't ride had a nice bunkhouse to relax in and wait. We brought food with us. The road is several miles of dirt, but providing the conditions are dry, it's not a big deal. My little econo car made it no problem. Tracy LNovember 3, 2024Second visit to the Double R - can't say enough good things about it!! This was my second visit to the Double R and it didn't disappoint. I arrived on a Thursday, just in time for lunch, and immediately felt welcomed back into the Double R family. It was great to see the familiar and friendly faces of Ron, Trina, Renee, Billy and Hannah, as well as some family I was meeting for the first time. We went out for a quick ride after lunch and I was paired up with Gypsy. What a cracker she is. We were well matched - her personality is a lot like mine! Ron really know his horses. And it was great to have Billy back at the front of the rides. My home from home this time was the bunkhouse - built by the Double R team. Right by one of the paddocks, huge windows on three sides of the living room and a fantastic view of the sunrise coming up over the hills. The space itself was really comfortable, especially the bed. We had a ranch trip out to the bull riding in Tombstone on Saturday. It was cold, but what a great night. It was my first experience of anything like that and I loved it. I don't know how those guys stay on the bulls for any length of time, let alone 8 seconds. And there was some excitement when one of the bulls broke out of the arena. There were a couple of blustery days during my stay, but that didn't put a dampener on it. The riding was excellent, and I managed to do a couple of rides that I didn't do on my first trip. Trina is a great, and very patient, teacher and although I didn't do a lesson this time around, I remembered everything she taught me from my last trip, and picked up a few new tips while she was teaching others. There was a great mix of guests, which made for some interesting and lively chat in the lodge during meals. Meals which were plentiful and delicious! Be prepared to put on some weight while you're there! My adult daughter and I share a love of horses. We wanted to do a ranch experience where there would be plenty of riding and new and beautiful scenery. We could not have chosen a more perfect place to stay and experience life on the ranch! From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed and like we belonged there. Renee was overseeing the ranch that weekend and she is such a gem! From the perfect horses picked out for us (thank you Cardio and Catalina), to our lovely and spacious accommodations, to the varied trail rides in the desert and mountains, to the filling and delicious meals, to the wonderful conversations, to the scenery and wildlife, and all the friendly dogs, it was the trip of a lifetime! A big, big thank you to Billy as well, the horse wrangler! We were in such good hands on all of our rides. He was informative and funny too. Also, Sandra made us delicious and filling meals. Renee even took us to Tombstone for some old western town fun. If I could give a 100 star review, I would. That’s how special this place is, and we were made to feel like family from everyone! Great stay! Compared with The Netherlands, what a magnificant scenery in Arizona, as from the ranch, situated in the middle of lovely nowhere. A very spacious estate, for the horses, people and the dogs. Hospitality rules at Double R! To some extent, became part of the family and enjoyed 3 tasty, freshly made meals a day (thank you Trina & Renee!). The team take very good care of the horses; individual (special) food, farrier comes every Friday, lots of room to roam and regular grooming. The cabin I stayed in was cosy, spacious enough and with a nice little porch. I had a bit of an issue with my internet data and Ron was so kind to drive me back to Benson to get things sorted. Thorougly enjoyed the rides we made. Due to the surface, only walking pace. Jessie politely answered all my questions about e.g. Arizona, the ranch and the horses and was, as Ron, very interested in my country. Billy lead us in a calm and peaceful manner, regularly checking if we all were okay and making stops for us to drink water. At my request a couple of us spent a fun afternoon and evening in touristic Tombestone. My stay was ca. 4 days. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. I Can't thank you all enough, Billy, Renee, Tessia, Shari, John, Hannah, and anyone else I've missed! The food was all freshly prepared, and we never had the same meal twice! The horses were beautiful, and all experienced in looking after complete beginners. There are 7 dogs at the ranch, and they are all super friendly and adorable! Our accomodation was amazing. When we arrived, we were the only guests for the first 4 days, so had our pick of the room choices. We chose the cottage, which sleeps up to 8 people. We felt very spoilt having a bedroom each for the 2 of us! Ron lent us the golf buggy to get to and from our cottage, as it was a 5 minute walk from the main ranch. I had so much fun driving that around every day. We tried roping and archery, which was super fun! And had a brilliant evening out watching a Rodeo. There is also an above ground pool and hot tub, getting up at 4am to watch the sunrise from the hot tub was a highlight for me. I was welcomed like a guest, not like a tourist, I ate all my meals with them. It really felt like I was part of the family. I came to ride and I definitely spent a lot of time on a horse. Ranging from 3h to 7h a day depending on the number of rides you choose to do. I also took a private lesson with Trina that was really good. Even got to try a little bit of roping. My horse Dante was amazing, very nice to ride and well trained. Ron and Trina are amazing, they took me to Tombstone on Saturday so I could visit the city and they even invited me to a bull riding event. I wish I could have stayed longer, there is so much to do. I came to ride and I definitely spent a lot of time on a horse. Ranging from 3h to 7h a day depending on the number of rides you choose to do. I also took a private lesson with Trina that was really good. Even got to try a little bit of roping. My horse Dante was amazing, very nice to ride and well trained. Ron and Trina are amazing, they took me to Tombstone on Saturday so I could visit the city and they even invited me to a bull riding event. I wish I could have stayed longer, there is so much to do. We were looking for a change of scenery. We stayed at a resort in Oro Valley and found the R&R Ranch in Benson and booked the half day ride. Since I have been coming to Az, I have always looked at the scenery and imagined how awesome it must have been. This was my best ride yet. We rode up and down steep trails. The ranch hands, Billy and John, were awesome. You need to have some riding knowledge to ride this trail, but they have tempted me with an all-day ride. Victoria ESeptember 15, 2024An Amazing Experience We had such a wonderful time! We booked the Three Peaks ride, which was two and a half hours. Apparently this is intended more for intermediate riders, and we are definitely novices, but our guides were so lovely and knowledgeable that we had no problems. The scenery was amazing and one of our guides pointed out historic sites along the mountain range. One thing I can’t emphasize enough is water! Drink plenty of water and ask for breaks if you need them. Couldn’t have imagined it any better. Double R Guest Ranch is truly one of the most amazing places I have travelled to. I arrived as a stranger and left feeling like family. First of all, the ranch owners are amazing! Trina and Ron made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. They were always there to answer questions and help with anything I needed. I have been a horse person since I was a kid and I loved seeing how they cared for the horses. Every Friday the farrier would come and take care of the horses' hooves. I loved that they let everyone help and pitch in if they wanted to, so I got to experience the full cowboy life. The ranch offers a variety of rides through the Arizona desert, including spectacular views and giant cacti. Ron has excellent experience to judge which horse to choose for which rider. They have 35 horses so I was able to experience different horses on different rides. I would particularly recommend the Three Peaks ride and for more experienced riders the Fast Ride. Romeo was an amazing horse! I always felt safe! I enjoyed the evenings together, with homemade food and laughter. OMG - I laughed every single day and made friends for life! I went in July —- it is hot in Arizona in the summer but it’s a dry heat. Seriously I had a wonderful time. The owners treat you like family or even better!! The horses are well cared for and a joy to ride. There are numerous trails to ride. Billy was my guide and he’s excellent. The other guides I met were good too of course. There is a cute gift shop. I was there during the slow season for a week — hot July — so I got to ride 5 horses. I hope to return for a few days to a week to experience the longer trails - rides. I rode morning and evening. I did one noon ride and it was too hot for me. Double R is excellent whether you are alone or, a couple, a family or a group!!! Bring comfy shoes with a low heel, comfy pants and I personally recommend long sleeve shirts with vents .. hiking fishing type. A hat n sunglasses are very important. (Read my previous reviews) My first visit was in May 2023. I had ridden a little bit before as a child but not as an adult and never in Western style. As an English man in his late fifties and travelling solo for the first time, I was a bit nervous and a little bit apprehensive about the trip, not knowing what to expect. But when I arrived all of that disappeared immediately. My first point of contact was with a Cowboy called Larry who picked me up from the airport in Tucson. (Transfers can be arranged) Chatting to Larry on the journey to the ranch really settled my previous apprehensions and by the time we reached the ranch it was like we were old friends. On arriving at the ranch I was firstly greeted by the dogs who live there, closely followed by the owners, Ron & Trina, who with their many years of experience hosting guests are both so committed to giving you the best experience that the Cowboy lifestyle can offer.. and boy do they deliver!! All guests dine together in a large family style dining room where everybody gets to know each other and share stories about everything, from the weather to their jobs, the day's events, tomorrow's plans and everything in between. Ron & Trina like to get to know you & your aspirations so that they can better accommodate your stay and make for a more personal experience. I had so much fun and made several new friends on that 1st trip that I couldn't wait to return. On my 2nd visit in October 2023, Ron asked me what it was that I had hoped to find.. I replied "I need a change, a purpose, a challenge and I want to be a Cowboy".. The next morning at breakfast, Ron told me he was going to implement a training course specific to my needs, and almost immediately the "Double R Wrangler training Scheme was born" and I became their inaugural wrangler in training "WIT"... As a ranch hand it wasn't just about riding horses and having fun in the sun, it can be hard work, gruelling, back-breaking, tiring and rewarding all at the same time. My 3rd visit in February 2024 I arrived as a WIT volunteer and I felt like a valued member of the Double R Guest Ranch family. I stayed in one of the Wrangler trailers, not as plush and luxurious as the guest cabins that I had previously stayed in, but it was just as clean & comfortable with everything that I needed. February in Arizona was cold & wet, but along with Sue (another volunteer) who is a horse trainer from Germany, we knuckled down and joined in with the feeding, training, exercising, grooming etc and with all of the other hard work that goes on behind the scenes to keep the ranch running smoothly and efficiently. (the ranch has won an award for their hard work and the duty of care that they give to their horses). I stayed for the whole month and I learned a lot from everyone there including some life skills from the seasoned Wranglers who literally grew up on horseback. My riding ability improved immensely and I was beginning to feel a sense of achievement. My 4th visit was in May 2024 I chose to return to the ranch in May because I wanted to celebrate my 60th Birthday with my new found friends and American brethren. Previous guests also returned to help me celebrate. (You can make lifelong friends at the ranch). Also as a surprise for me, Renee (another previous guest but now a permanent ranch resident) Had organised the ranch's first ever "Double R Rodeo" as part of the celebrations. We had Barrel racing, slalom poles, team penning & roping,.. With my new skills and horse riding abilities, I decided to take part in everything, (I felt like a boy living out his childhood fantasy of being a Cowboy) afterwards Ron & Trina fed us with barbecued meats, pastas, salads etc etc... I have experienced this ranch first hand, as a guest as a friend and as a trainee wrangler.. (I've even led trail rides) I can honestly say since that first trip last year, not only has this place met expectations it has far exceeded them and has given me a new purpose. Right from the start, Ron picked me up and was instantly attentive and welcoming, getting to know me on the way to the ranch. I spent my days riding a beautiful horse, Catalina, whom Ron paired me with, I rode her for the duration of my stay and we got along amazingly and she took good care of me during our ride, Catalina knew her job, did it well and kept me safe. I went on all solo rides with the ranch hands but one and had such an enjoyable time on each ride, seeing the vast landscape of the ranch, great conversation and the desert of Arizona itself, much different to that of Australia. The ranch also was incredibly accommodating, taking me into town to see the local rodeo’s as I wished, barrel racing and roping, dinner at tombstone, introduced me to their friends and always made me feel welcome and just another member of the ranch. I really enjoyed just merging with the team as one of their own and seeing the real life ranch experience as well as their and the towns lifestyle. I stayed in the single cabin, which was gorgeous and western themed, the accommodation was clean, welcoming and very comfortable with a living room, fridge, sink, bathroom and bedroom. The aircon worked extremely well so there was an escape from the heat after rides and for midday naps when needed. The food was also great, after travel for a few weeks prior it was lovely to have homemade American food, all of which was delicious. I got multiple rides in a day and an intro lesson into roping, and I will be sure to be back to make the most of the other activities and lessons, however just in cooler weather! My one recommendation would be to travel not in the peak of summer, I added this stay onto an already planned trip which wasn't flexible with dates, so I made the most of the time I was there given the heat, even though it was very hot and I loved the heat, I would go when its slightly cooler. Speaking of the heat, myself, ranch hands and the horses were looked after and not overworked during the heat. I also have to thank the ranch hand Declan, who took me on a fast ride on his day off, he was attentive to my abilities and skillset as a new rider to western riding and paced the ride accordingly. I was thrilled with my experience on the ranch as real look into the modern American cowboy life, it was as I had expected from the research I had done and the reviews I had read. David HJune 18, 2024Wonderful Father's Day Ride My daughter and I came out for Father's day, and I must say the entire staff was awesome - very friendly and very informative. It's been a while since I have been around horses, and my daughter had never ridden before, so they were very kind in explaining how they go about preparing each horse for the ride, and how they match up the horses they assign to each rider based on size, weight, experience and how comfortable they are around the horses. They were all friendly and engaging, and genuinely cared about the horses, their guests and their guests experience. We chose the Ocotillo Ride, which is an hour and a half ride through desert trails that go over dirt roads, through washes, up hills and across the tops of several ridges that give you an excellent view of the surrounding area, and the views are absolutely amazing! Even though it was hot, the natural green foliage this time of year is truly unexpected and welcoming in the middle of the desert. My daughter had a blast visiting with the wranglers on the ride. They talked about everything from horses and dogs to golf and college. They made her feel at home and she really enjoyed the ride. I spent alot of time visiting with our guide, she was very knowledgeable and friendly and we too talked about everything from the surrounding area, the different trail rides as well as how she got into riding horses and becoming a trail guide for Double R. If you enjoy the company of good hearted people and don't mind getting a little dust on your boots, I would highly recommend spending some time with the folks at Double R Ranch. Thanks Y'all. When we got out of the car, we were instantly greeted by some of the sweetest pups. We got there early and enjoyed just sitting and watching all of the horses running and playing. You can tell they are all loved and well cared for. We got checked in and hung out while the guides gathered the horses for the ride. They take the time to match each rider with what horse they believe they will do best with. I got the privilege to be paired with lightning. He was extremely well trained and amazing on the trail. I had my mom with me who has only been on horseback a few times and was a bit nervous for the ride. They took the time to get her comfortable and helped her throughout the ride. I highly recommend Double R Ranch if you are looking for a place to try. The staff is so friendly and helpful from the time you call to book until it's time to leave. The staff were absolutely lovely, super accommodating and so helpful. They all really go out their way to make the guests feel welcome and comfortable. I really enjoyed the great home-cooked meals (including delicious desserts with every dinner!). The staff joined us for the meals, shared their knowledge and stories and were genuinely interested in the guests. The horses are really well looked after, happy, well-trained and just beautiful. The bunk house I stayed in was clean, cosy and comfortable. I loved waking up in the morning, stepping out of the cabin and seeing the horses right outside as the first thing. Everyone at the ranch has a respectful and gentle approach to horsemanship and all the animals. Safety and wellbeing – both guests’ and the horses - is taken very seriously at the ranch. Ron’s intuition and wisdom for matching riders with the right horses is great. I loved the horse I was assigned, and did multiple different trail rides (my favorite being the three peaks ride and the sunset ride) during my stay. I also did a riding lesson with Trina because I wanted to know more about the Western riding style (I’m used to English). She is a great teacher and I loved her showing her how it’s done in style on her horse. I’m an experienced rider myself, but I was pleased to see that at Double R Ranch even beginners were taken on breathtaking trailrides thanks to the good-natured and wise horses and the experienced staff. This is something that would be hard to find in my home country Finland and across Europe, where most decent trail rides require previous riding experience. I highly recommend booking a ride or a longer stay here! From the moment you arrive at the ranch to the time you leave the place (most likely with a big smile and wonderful memories to take away with you) you’ll feel relaxed, respected, cared for and safe. My friend and I stayed at Double R Ranch from Thursday evening until mid-day Sunday. We went for rides Friday morning and late afternoon, and Saturday morning - each one longer than the last. There were other rides, but those were the ones we chose. We went with a woman from Finland/Germany area on all the rides, which was really nice. We all got to know each other better through the weekend, as we also shared meals. She and my friend also took a lesson Sunday morning, and we went to Tombstone Saturday afternoon and evening to watch bull riding and have dinner at Big Nose Kate's. The rest of the time the ranch served three full meals daily - more than I usually eat! The food was good and various people from the ranch joined us at meals. My friend and I stayed at the cottage - a 2-minute drive or a 5-minute walk from the main ranch buildings. It was wonderful, with 2 bedrooms, a shared bathroom, kitchen, dining and living rooms and a lovely wrap-around porch, as well as great views of the surrounding mountains and fields. I liked getting to know the people at the ranch - Anna, Hannah, Renee, and Trina and Ron (owners), as well as the horses and certainly the dogs! I liked that I was able to help out a bit later by currying and brushing the horses before saddle-up time, and taking them to get water and holding them. For me, it's nice to be able to help out a little. Everyone was good with all the questions and very patient. I rode Catalina, who was so much like the horse I rode as a teenager. She was a great horse and very good with the trails and me. I really liked the ride on Saturday morning (3 Peaks). It had spacious views, and given the season, the desert was abundant with flowers and this trail was perfect for that! Brian BApril 5, 2024Great Horse Vaction We had a great experience. Ron paired us up with good horses that fit our abilities. We rode out with total beginners and had a good ride. Ron then chose to take us on a seperate ride for more advanced riders. What a blast!! We rode suicide mountain. We met a guest who was there on her 5th trip. That tells you how much it is liked by people. The food was excellent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner served at a big ranch table. We had good conversation with good food. The cabin was very nice. We woke up, walked out the door and were 10 feet from horses. My wife was in heaven. Ron went out of his way to help us with our own horse problems back home. He contact his vet/son and we talked. In February I Ieft Germany for an adventure and was volunteering at the Double R Guest Ranch for 6 weeks. I grew up around horses and have been in the saddle mostly my whole life, so I was looking for a place where I can ride and work with horses - and It was by far the best time of my life (yes, me as a German saying this ;-)) I arrived as a stranger and left as family. I did not have any expectations but I think whatever I would be able to expect, these 6 weeks exceeded it by far. This is a truly magical place. As there were so many amazing moments, for those who want to have a short review: sorry, there’s just too much to say ;-) but I’ll try to focus on the highlights Ron and Trina offer various different rides, from 1 hour to a full day ride, as well as fast rides. So no matter if you’re a beginner or experienced rider, they will have a perfect ride for you. And as there are 35 horses (yes, I counted them myself ;-)), they will also have a great fit for you. The horses are in great shape. Before every ride, you will be asked for your level of experience and then the horse is picked to match. I truly enjoyed taking guests out for the rides and making connections with many of them. Even being back in Germany now, I am still in touch with some of them and friendships have been built. I started joining the guests on rides and from the time I could remember the trail routes, I was allowed to lead the rides. As a volunteer, besides feeding, grooming, keeping the tack room clean, etc. Ron also gave me the opportunity to work with the horses. What I loved about that, is the trust and freedom that I was given and that I was also able to contribute my knowledge. I didn’t ask for a day off the whole time, as I really enjoyed working with the horses and taking care of the guests. Everyone working there was so nice and we became quite close over the time. When I arrived, besides Ron and Trina (the owners) Bely was working there as a wrangler, Ricky from England was volunteering as well (not his first time at the ranch - you’ll find some reviews of his here, too) also we had Poncho and Tess helping during the week and Hannah helping at the weekend. Not to forget Renee, who I can now call my dear friend, who first came as a ranch guest and is now living there, and helping out whenever help is needed. These people made my stay even more amazing and I am so thankful for the time there. I really felt like family and no need to say that there may or may not have been tears involved when I had to leave 😉. But as Ron said, it’s not a goodbye, it’s “until we meet again” - because I’ll come back for sure.Posted on Google

The water pressure was very weak and if you plan to do any cooking make sure you bring all the ingredients with you. Otherwise this ranch was very charming. Ron, the owner greeted me like I belonged there, very friendly. My cottage room was really nice and clean. The homestyle meals were good. The staff was great and inviting. The horses were nice. Ron picked a good one for me. The trail rides were great, just as the scenery was too. Billy was a great guide. They keep guests to a minimum, which makes it a better experience than other guest ranches. It allows for more attention and a better experience. Ron and his deeply experienced team made sure we were paired with the best horses and gear, and the trail was spectacular. Ridge rides in the foothills, watching desert hares cavort over the land, saguaros and barrel cacti everywhere. Just an outstanding experience!! We even got in some limited gallops when the horses rode uphill, which was very fun indeed. From the moment you arrive, the peace and quiet is just incredible. The horses, the views, the people, just....amazing! My daughter is very quiet around new people, and Ron seemed to make it his mission to bring her out of her shell before we left, and he accomplished that by day two. Maybe next time, she'll let you talk to her boyfriend lol. The resident guest, Renee...I can't say enough about her. She needs to be featured on the website asap. She just has this way about her that puts people at ease the second she introduces herself. She may not know it, but she's my new bff :) The family style mealtimes were definitely one of the highlights, with great food and conversation. Trina is just so sweet, and her food was amazing. Stephanie WJanuary 7, 2024Perfect Getaway for our Horse-Loving kid! Our 10 year-old horse-obsessed daughter decided on a stay at Double R Ranch for her special milestone birthday trip. From the moment we arrived on site, we were blown away by the hospitality and welcoming nature at the ranch. Our normally very anxious daughter has never been so confident and truly in her element. She was able to help feed and care for the horses every day, and ride horses to her hearts content. The family-style eating for all meals prepared by Sharon just added to the feeling of being part of the family there. We loved the rustic cabin with large windows facing the sunrise every morning with views of the horses grazing in their pastures. Since the ranch is away from the main part of town the WiFi and cell service was spotty. We actually liked that because it really helped us unplug and connect with each other for this trip, but definitely something to be prepared for. Ron and Trina were kind and accommodating! All of the staff were knowledgeable and kind! I have not had a ton of riding experience besides a few lessons and trail rides, and the trail was definitely a fun challenge, but I felt completely safe and relaxed the entire time. Max was a complete gentle giant and not once did I feel that I could not trust him or that I was unsafe. Our guide was also excellent, made great conversation with every single person on our ride, and gave plenty of helpful advice while on the trail. Ron, the owner, was on holiday when I arrived, but we spoke by video call and he recommend a horse for me to ride, and he was spot on. Catalina was great - there was no nastiness in her at all and she took great care of me out on the trails. There were only a few guests at the ranch during my visit, but there was enough food to feed a small army, and it was delicious. Freshly prepared and cooked on the premises - Kelly, Trina and Sharon are excellent cooks. The accommodation was exactly what I was expecting - big cosy bed and a coffee machine. What more could you want! Pancho and Billy were great ride leaders and made sure that everyone was happy and comfortable on the rides. They know the horses so well, and of course are excellent horsemen. My last ride was a lesson in the arena from Trina, along with three other guests, and she really taught me a lot. I'm an experienced rider, but I couldn't get the hang of the Western saddle and the looser reins, but Trina got me right. We only had one rainy afternoon, so took a trip to Tombstone and had dinner in Big Nose Kate's saloon. The rest of the time the weather was perfect for riding. I'd recommend anyone to visit, whether you're and experience rider or a beginner - they will take good care of you. I cannot wait to go back.Posted on Google

Each and every animal from the dogs to the horses are friendly and treated with compassion at the Double R Ranch. The owners, Ron and Trina, are not only kind but also enjoyable company, showing genuine interest in each guest. They go out of their way to ensure that you enjoy your time on the ranch and that all of your expectations are met. Opting for the 5-day bunkhouse stay, I found cleanliness, comfort, and privacy amid breathtaking views of horses and mountains. The lack of internet in the bunkhouse, surprisingly, enhanced my goal of disconnecting from life's stresses and reconnecting with nature. It didn't disappoint. The trails were both challenging and beautiful with several options to chose from. The staff will selectively pair you with a horse to match your experience and riding style. I observed them do this with several guests and was amazed at how well they matched each horse and rider. I really enjoyed getting to know my horse and appreciated his playful personality. I will warn that you might make a new friend if you show a little extra love between rides. Already missing my buddy, Max. Meals, served family-style in the lodge, were a highlight. Everything was homemade and cooked with care. Despite my introverted nature, I eagerly anticipated dining with my newfound ranch family. Ron, Pancho and Billy know the horses so well, and matched them perfectly with the riders. The rides weren't fast (although fast rides are available to those who want them) but were ideal for me as it was my first time using Western tack. I got some great tips from Trina on how to ride better which really helped me. Billy and Pancho were great ride leaders and really know the area well. The scenery is amazing and we saw some really colourful skies during the sunset rides. Family-style arrangement that we shared with another family who were there for extended lessons over a series of days. Great food and lively conversation as we supped and got to know one another . . . just like in the movies when strangers gathered in a western hotel for a meal. The day was a great success, because as we drove home, EVERYONE was very pleased and content. There was talk of buying a ranch and riding horses. We were all energized! Awesome horses to ride, fabulous desert scenery and wonderful people to share it all with. Highlights were a riding lesson with Trina, loping on Lightning and the Three Peaks ride. Went to a rodeo in town and to Tombstone for shopping and dinner. Great food and wonderful staff. Stayed in the bunk house this time and it faces the sunrise and the mountains. We all had an exceptional time. The owners, Ron and Trina, catered to fulfill our every desire and live our dreams. I highly recommend Double R Ranch for everyone, beginning and advanced riders, and all ages too. One of my friends had never ridden before, the other has owned horses her whole life. Both thoroughly enjoyed riding through the beautiful desert and surrounding mountains. Even though I had previously ridden these routes, I was still blown away by the beauty and views. The horses are so well trained. It always amazes me that Ron has the ability to pick just the perfect horse for you. Bill and Gary, the wranglers that lead the rides, are experienced and ensure your safety at all times. On this trip, we also took roping lessons from expert roper, Trina. Another day, we were really spoiled by having Ron and Trina lead us. Can't get much better than that! I recommend the all inclusive package for at least 2-3 days so you can really enjoy the ranch. Trina and Sharon prepare wonderful meals and you will enjoy the great food and friendly, interesting conversations. The 1st time, I arrived a stranger and left as a friend, this time, I arrived as a friend and left as family ❤ I honestly can't recommend this place highly enough! Everyone on the ranch are AMAZING! Ron & Trina (the owners) are the best hosts I've ever met, nothing is too much trouble and they will do everything in their power to accommodate and make your stay a memorable one. With Sharon in the kitchen you will never go hungry, she is a whiz at what she does and your taste buds will always be satisfied, her homemade bread is to die for! Billy, Gary & Pancho are three of the Wranglers and by God can they wrangle! They are soo knowledgeable about the horses and trails, and helpful with everything, from the ranch to the mountains & back again. On a personal note.. sharing a couple of cold beers with Billy, getting some great advice and words of wisdom from Pancho, and a couple of solo rides with Gary are memories that will stay with me a lifetime. Not to mention some great laughs & banter with Renee who introduced me to Mia & Lolo aka "the Frenchies" a couple of young cowhands from France who were volunteering on the ranch. On my first visit here in May '23 I met an incredible and inciteful horsewoman, Lori, who had also returned, this time with a couple of her "Cowgirl" friends in tow, Jolene & Donna. OMG! With these 3 beautiful crazy ladies, not only did I have the most incredible holiday (ever) I have also made dear friends for life. The other guests I met there were amazing people too, Mike & Rosemary, Krista, Mark & Sally, We all had such a laugh together. (Some even changed their vacation plans to stay on at the ranch a little longer). There is so much to do & experience here, Some excursions too, that include Rodeos, Tacos, Visits to Tombstone etc.. (extra cost) I wanted to complete my holiday by taking a "fast ride" So to keep me safe, I had one to one tuition from Trina (the "Team roping" Queen) in the ranch's arena, then on the final ride of my stay I joined the "Guv'nor" Ron who gave me an assessment and took me for the most amazing adrenalin rushed ride of my life! I had never gone that fast on a horse before, and it's difficult to find enough superlatives to describe it. At times it was as if I'd transcended my body and was watching from above, it was like I was flying.. Finding this place was fate, I have now found, My Raison d'être Everybody is catered for, whether you are a first time rider or an experienced Professional You REALLY should experience this Ranch for yourselves.. My husband and I had no experience riding horses, but we felt very safe and had a wonderful time. I rode Cardio and my husband rode Cloud, both of which are very gentle horses. If you want a true western experience of the real old west and not a resort, but have a hospitable home feeling, The Double R is it. You are greeted by Ron, who wants you to be comfortable there and his great staff, You get a down to earth room or cottage, 3 down to earth good meals a day. All the riding of horses over great trails covering over many miles and mountains, lead by a great guide. The horses are great. This all is if you have the package deal. There are other activities for everyone, horseshoes, bow and arrow & pistol target shooting, off ranch adventures, camp fires and more. There are also riding private lessons. Ron and his staff want you to feel welcome and at home, as I felt. He accomplishes this by having a limited amount of riders and not a large amount of impersonal people. There is room for novice, experienced and children riders. The landscape gives you that old western feeling and the mountains with their beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Ron and his staff want you to get something special out of your stay at the ranch, which I felt I did. Incredible views in every direction. Our guides are so friendly and we had great conversation throughout our ride. This ranch is a hidden gem, with horses that are so loved and well taken care of, as well as perfectly trained. Whether you visit for a ride, or stay for several nights, you’ll be met with warm hospitality, open arms and hearts, have meaningful conversations, and leave with a full belly. I went on many rides including the fast ride, the 3 peaks ride, the sunset ride and many others. The horses were all great. They are all very friendly and you can tell they are very well taken care of. I adopted their Pony Butterscotch for most of the week and we got along very well. I rode another one of their horses WACO for the fast ride and he was also great. There were so many other horses I would have liked to ride but unfortunately there was not enough time. The hosts Ron and Trina were wonderful and incredibly accommodating. We had a good time at night as well and watched some horse movies together! All in all it was a great time! Cinda BAugust 6, 2023A Memorable Family Experience I visited with my 3 grandsons, ages 12, 12, and 15. The staff was so kind and helpful, allowing the boys to participate in caring for the horses, and other learning experiences around the ranch. They "bonded" with the horses and dogs, and loved the daily trail rides with the wranglers. The food was tasty and perfect for hungry boys. Even Grandma got to ride a couple of times--the last during a late afternoon of storm clouds, rays of sun, cooling breezes, and a rainbow--just gorgeous! I was at the Double R Ranch for a one night Staycation (all inclusive) from Saturday to Sunday. It was an amazing experience from the first minute I got to the ranch. The dirt road to the ranch was interesting to drive on, but the landscape was just terrific. As it was too hot to ride on Saturday, I was spontaneously invited to go to the Western town Tombstone together with other guests, which have been staying longer. And within minutes total strangers became friends with whom you could chat, laugh and share stories. I spent the night in the Cottage, a wonderful guest house with beautiful furnishing where I immediately felt at home. After breakfast I went with a group of five (including two cowboys from the ranch and a volunteer) to a three hour trial ride up the Three Peaks Mountain Trail. Ron has a very good feeling in selecting the most suitable horse for his guests and I was matched with Catalina, a really sweet chestnut mare. Thankfully it was a cloudy morning and therefore not as hot. So I was able to really enjoy the amazing few, the tall saguaro cacti, other blooming cacti and bushes and small critters like birds and lizards. The horses were great, calm and sure-footed and safely took us up and down the narrow and stony path of the mountains. But the best moment was when we got down the first peak and rode along a river valley, where the soft sand was a peaceful contrast to all the thorny plantlife and hard stones along the trail. After a delicious lunch and a nice chat with the owner and one of the guests, it was unfortunately time to leave. I could have definitely stayed for a few more days, enjoy the horses and explore the other trails out there in the Arizona dessert. I will definitely try to come back for another vacation (but probably not in high summer) and can only recommend Double R Ranch to any horse or Western lover coming into this area! Our whole stay was wonderful! The cottage was cozy and plenty of space for our 5 person family. The horseback ride was so much fun, and we couldn't have done it without their kindness and expertise. Ron rode with my 5 year old son, who was nervous to start, but soon felt like a real cowboy! My 7 year old got to ride her own pony but was led by Ron's wife, Trina, the whole time so she felt very secure, and my 9 year old rode her own horse but was closely watched and reminded how to guide her him along the way. We know it was a lot of work on their part to ensure the kids could ride safely, and we are just so grateful to have had this experience as a family. I truly do not feel like my words or photos do this place justice. There is something spiritual happening for me here. It’s an elevated since of serenity. This place is the truest most authentic way of the west I have EVER experienced. The horses are all living their best life in their natural elements. We were fed 3 meals a day and we were fed VERY well. Here’s the thing, this is not some frilly horse barn with fancy pants accommodations and horses that wear blankets and sleep in stalls. No. This is cowboy country folks. It dust and mud and rocks and mountains and the roaring thunder of horse hooves ringing in the air. When we stepped onto this living, working, ranch in less than an hour, we felt like family. Everything is catered around you and your needs and your capabilities, from the food, to the horses, to the specific rides you go on. I can’t say enough, not only about those that run the ranch but even the people you meet when visiting! TN family meets LA family that we will forever have a place in our hearts for! What are the odds? It was all meant to be. Then theirs sweet Sharon running around helping with all the daily task . She’s an absolute doll! Their wrangler Billy is a treasure and will be a friend for life. He is helpful and accommodating and looks after you and the horses as family. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen. Ron & Trina. I have no words. I love them both and I will be forever grateful for the gift of their hospitality. I can’t say enough. You won’t know until you go. (Anywhere) I was looking for something outside the box, and boy did I find it...in abundance!! I've just returned from an all inclusive holiday on this ranch, To be frank, 5 stars is nowhere near enough to rate my experience. If I could, I would give as many stars as I saw in the Arizona night sky, which due to there being no light pollution, were in the thousands!! From the moment I stepped out of the airport, I got a warm Cowboy welcome from Larry who was there waiting to drive me to the Double R ranch. (they will arrange a transfer for a small fee). On arriving at the ranch I was greeted by Ron and some of the ranch's other 4 legged friends and escorted to my home for the next week. A beautiful and quaint shepherd's hut style cabin, which had it's own living area, toilet shower and bedroom which had a huge and comfortable double bed. Further sleeping area was available on a mezzanine level. Everyone on the ranch is so friendly and helpful. Ron & Trina will go out of there way to ensure your stay is a memorable one. Trina helped by Sharon will make sure you never go hungry with plenty of tasty home cooked meals. All of the Wranglers are very experienced and knowledgeable about the horses and the mountainous terrain on which the trails are made, and with 60,000 acres, no 2 trails are the same. For most of my stay Billy was my Wrangler and I can't praise him highly enough, sharing a cold beer with him on my front porch at the end of the day, was one of the highlights of my holiday, and there were MANY highlights. I recommend a day trip into Tombstone also, I took a stagecoach ride through the town and got some great info from the driver. While there check out Big Nose Kate's Saloon for excellent wild west food and drink & live music too. There is a checkpoint on the main highway out of Tombstone so if you're not a US citizen take your passport on this excursion, it will be needed. I left the ranch with more friends & extended friendships than I arrived with, I am currently at home desperately trying to re-arrange my plans so that I can return again soon!! I highly recommend Double R Guest Ranch And I'd like to thank everyone there for making my holiday extra special. Very personable. It put me at ease. Ron was my "guide" for the hour long ride. He was great at giving me gentle instruction. I was way beyond rusty. Lol. We won a trip to Double R Ranch through a Tennessee Wildlife Federation fundraiser auction and decided to embrace the unknown. What a wonderful decision. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family. Horses were assigned to us based on our skills and personality. The rides were increasingly challenging and enabled us to experience the Arizona countryside and mountains up close and personal. Meals were delicious and eaten at a large table that included all guests and Double R staff. Our lodging was comfortable with breathtaking sunrise views. We stayed in a 2 bedroom modern cottage on site, were served delicious meals in a group dining room eating with the owners, and rode morning and night on trusted, surefooted, well trained horses! Our rides were on private land with beautiful western scenery. We found we gradually improved (I had never ridden this regularly!) and our rides became more challenging and longer as we improved. We took a trip to Tombstone to enjoy the towns history and a great dinner at Big Nose Kate’s from the 1880s! We also went to bull riding (😮), Quarter Horse racing and team calf roping. Our experience on the ranch was absolutely magical…we will certainly be back as there are so many more trails to do and wonderful horses to ride! Ron the owner was very nice. I definitely definitely recommend, but if your a little nervous about it don’t let the horse know this … they can sense it and will play off that ( knowledge from Pancho). My horse rode me directly into a tree , was biting the horse in front of me I was terrified the horse I front would kick back , I ended my ride sooner than what I paid for , the horse really was poorly behaved . I cannot say enough about our wonderful experience with Ron and his crew. We had the most amazing ride. The ranch is beautiful. The trails were beautiful as well. They made us feel safe the entire time and took extra special care of my kids who were scared and they ended up having a blast!
