Sky Islands & Wildlife

One of the Most Biodiverse Regions in North America · Elgin, Arizona

The Double R Guest Ranch sits at the heart of the “Sky Islands” – a rare convergence zone where six distinct biotic regions meet. Every trail ride moves through living proof of it: high desert grassland, oak-studded canyons, and mountain forest, often within the same afternoon.

A CONVERGENCE FOUND NOWHERE ELSE

Why Naturalists Come to Elgin

The Sky Islands region is home to nearly 7,000 species of plants and animals – more than almost anywhere else in North America. It’s the only place in the United States where jaguars, ocelots, mountain lions, and bobcats share the same habitat. Much of this diversity falls under the Coronado National Forest, celebrated as the most ecologically rich national forest in the country – and the Double R borders it directly, with thousands of acres to explore just past the property line.

BIRDING & WILDLIFE

Over 200 Species, Right Outside Your Casita

Bring your binoculars. This stretch of the Sonoita Valley regularly hosts 200 to 300 bird species alongside dozens of mammals, reptiles, and amphibian species – making it a quiet favorite among birders and wildlife photographers. Guides are happy to point out what’s active during your stay, from raptors overhead to the smaller residents along the canyon floor.

GUIDED & UNHURRIED

See It From the Saddle

The best way to take in this landscape is still on horseback. Our guides know every trail, every seasonal change, and every place the land opens up into those sweeping Sky Island views. Whether you’re moving at an easy walk or asking for a faster pace, the terrain – and everything living in it – is part of the ride.

AFTER DARK

Some of Arizona’s Clearest Night Skies

At 5,300 feet, far from city light, the ranch offers some of the darkest, clearest night skies in southern Arizona – a quiet extension of the same natural setting that makes the daytime rides so memorable.
